the 2009 Season archive:

“The   your voice here  experiment”

This year is a very special one for us--we’re turning FIVE! So, raise your glass (or your juice box) and join us in a yearlong celebration of new voices and our company’s fifth birthday, as we undertake this season’s exploration:

“The   (your voice here)  Experiment.”

Last year, through our season-long “American Experiment,” we explored American themes, identity, and voices and created new work inspired by the historic and transformative American moment that was 2008. In this new moment, in which progress, inspired leadership and abundant hope are colliding with a deep sense of uncertainty and a variety of daunting global challenges, we ask:  What kind of art does this moment call for and inspire? What does the voice of NOW sound like?

This season, through “The   (your voice here)  Experiment”, NYTE is excited to explore these complex creative questions. To this end, we are launching a yearlong search for timely, compelling, dynamic new works; and in the spirit of our fifth birthday, we are also pleased to announce five major programming initiatives, all aimed at the cultivation, generation and support of new voices in the American theatre.

1. NYTE Summer Camp:  Calling all explorers! Pack your lunch, your imagination and your adventurous spirit! This summer, NYTE will bring together playwrights, directors and actors for an exciting artistic expedition! NYTE will host an intensive, week-long workshop providing several selected new works a forum for creative exploration and development. Submitted pieces can be at any stage of development, ranging from works in progress, to existing scripts, to proposals for devised work. The workshop will culminate in a sharing of the participating pieces. In the coming months, NYTE will be accepting applications for projects that would benefit from this collaborative, exploratory development process. Applications are now available!

2. One NYTE Stands:  Our monthly reading series is back! This season, in an effort to explore and support the voices of now, One NYTE Stands will expand its focus to feature many more readings of new works. In addition to these new voices, interspersed throughout the year will be readings of works by master playwrights—those whose voices powerfully captured the moment during their own era and whose work radically transformed the art of playwriting for all those who have followed.

3. Lift Every Voice:  We’ll continue our commitment to leadership, service and the development of emerging voices through Lift Every Voice, our education outreach program for underprivileged New York teens. Join us for our upcoming Lift Every Voice performance event, in collaboration with the students of West Bronx Academy, at 8pm on March 22nd at the Algonquin Theatre!

4. The Generations Project:  NYTE is proud to serve as a home for emerging leaders in the American theatre, and this year, we’re excited to launch a unique program designed to support and cultivate the voices and visions of leaders in the arts. This inter-generational conference will bring emerging and mid-career theatre professionals together with celebrated, visionary leaders in the American theatre. These artists, from varied creative fields and from many generations, will open a dialogue about vision and leadership in the arts. This innovative program will foster mentorship, inspire action and offer an exciting forum for discussion and exchange. Stay tuned for more details about this remarkable opportunity.

5. The Fairy Tale Smack-Down:  Join us for a unique 24-hours of fun, raucous and creative debauchery. Follow the breadcrumbs down the rabbit hole to this end-of-the-year bash, featuring a night of re-imagined adult fairy tales. Come celebrate with NYTE and give your year its happy ending.

This is just the beginning of what NYTE has in store for 2009! Look for more announcements throughout year, including a special invitation to our official birthday party in July, as part of our Second Annual Pie-Off!

Help us prepare for the next five years by supporting the Gimme Five Donation Drive! In honor of our birthday, donate just five dollars, and we’ll list you in our program. It’s easy! Donate in person at any NYTE event or donate right now! You can also give us a High Five by donating $50 or $500! If everyone on our mailing list donated just five dollars, it would fund a major portion of this year’s work! If everyone donated $50, it would support our entire season of programming and help pave the way for 2010! We are grateful for whatever contribution you can make—with your help, the next five years will be extraordinary!

All year long, we’ll be doing what five year olds do best: playing hard and dreaming big. Join us on this creative playground for a year of exuberant exploration and celebration!

New York Theatre Experiment is turning 5!

The female founder and spokeswoman of a major cosmetics company is concerned with dropping sales and drooping skin- she's not as young as she used to be and wants to restore her former beauty at any cost. When a scientist brings her a new miracle elixer made from wasp enzymes, she offers to become his test subject...but the product is not ready for human use and soon she finds herself transforming into the lethal "Wasp Woman"...
