Join New York Theatre Experiment for this kick-off event of the 2010 season! The Generations Project will bring together artists and leaders, across generations, for this forum on vision, leadership, and mentorship in the arts. Bring a friend, invite a mentor, and join the dialogue, as we discuss the future of our art form and our role in moving it forward.


This inspiring evening will feature the following speakers:

Seth Barrish (Co-Artistic Director and Co-Founder of The Barrow Group), Anne Bogart (Artistic Director of the SITI Company), Virginia Louloudes (Executive Director of A.R.T./NY), Beth Milles (Associate Professor at Cornell University & Head of the Directing MFA Program at Brown University) and Maryellen Kernaghan (founder of Kernaghan Associates, former Artistic Director of the award-winning arts education company, Plays for Living).


After the evening concludes, please join us for informal discussion, mingling and drinks.



BIOS:


Seth Barrish (Co-Artistic Director and Co-Founder of The Barrow Group) is an award-winning director, actor, composer, and musical director whose work has been enjoyed internationally, Off-Broadway, and regionally. His directing credits include: Mike Birbiglia’s Sleepwalk With Me, David Edgar’s Pentecost (Drama Desk Nomination, BEST PLAY), Martin Moran’s The Tricky Part (Two Drama Desk Nominations, BEST PLAY & BEST SOLO SHOW, Obie Award), and Jon Maran’s Old Wicked Songs (Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award & Garland Award for Best Direction, Pulitzer Prize Nomination), Thy Kingdom’s Coming, Lonely Planet, Good (Straw Hat Award for Best Direction), Ghost in the Machine, Tales From Hollywood, Greetings, Beau Jest, Three Sisters, and When You Comin’ Back Red Ryder?. He has worked at many notable theatres including The Intiman, The Promenade, McCarter, Long Wharf, Sundance Theatre Lab, The Geffen Playhouse, The Asolo Performing Arts Center, The Bleecker Street Theater, Playhouse 91, La Mama E.T.C., The Perry Street Theatre, Capital Rep, Shakespeare & Co., and The Barrow Group, and has made numerous film and television appearances. Mr. Barrish is a Master Teacher at The Barrow Group School, continuing to educate and inspire a multitude of working and student actors. He has also served as a Master Teacher at the International Director’s Symposium in Spoleto, Italy. He is author of the book An Actors Companion–99 Bits of Craft.


Anne Bogart is the Artistic Director of the SITI Company, which she founded with Japanese director Tadashi Suzuki in 1992. She is a Professor at Columbia University where she runs the Graduate Directing Program. Works with SITI include Antigone, Under Construction, Freshwater, Who Do You Think You Are, Radio Macbeth; Hotel Cassiopeia; Death and the Ploughman; La Dispute; Score; bobrauschenbergamerica; Room; War of the Worlds; Cabin Pressure; The Radio Play; Alice’s Adventures; Culture of Desire; Bob; Going, Going, Gone; Small Lives/Big Dreams; The Medium; Noel Coward’s Hay Fever and Private Lives; August Strindberg’s Miss Julie; and Charles Mee’s Orestes. She is the author of three books: A Director Prepares, The Viewpoints Book and And Then, You Act.


Maryellen Kernaghan has twenty-eight years experience as a Manager, Administrator Director, Executive Director and Producer in the Performing Arts. She has been responsible for fiscal, administrative and artistic management and direction of companies and projects, while balancing resources to achieve productions of highest integrity. She has produced, directed and managed new works, negotiated contracts and collaborated with artists to build dynamic team-oriented environments for productions in theatre, musical theatre & dance. Ms. Kernaghan has directed situational dramas and acted as facilitator for national programs on workplace ethics and diversity. She has experience in advocacy for and implementation of arts education programming using current and emerging technology, designed distance learning and educational outreach programs for K-12 students as well as universities and presenting organizations, and creating new revenue streams for not for profit organizations.


Virginia Louloudes became A.R.T./New York’s Executive Director in 1991. A.R.T./New York is the service and advocacy organization for New York City’s not-for-profit theatre community. Its membership is made up of 400 theatres of all sizes and missions in all five boroughs. Since her arrival, the organization’s budget and membership have nearly tripled. Ginny has developed a variety of programs to meet her constituents’ changing needs, including two shared office and rehearsal spaces: South Oxford Space, which houses 20 companies in Brooklyn and Spaces at 520, which provides offices to 24 nonprofit arts organizations in the Fashion District. A.R.T./New York provides more than 125 technical assistance workshops and roundtables annually and last year awarded cash grants of $1.4 million to 128 theatres and made lines of credit, cash flow and real estate loans totaling $1.1 million. Following September 11th, A.R.T./New York distributed the first study on the economic impact of the attacks on the City’s nonprofit theatres. Shortly thereafter the Mellon Foundation selected A.R.T./New York to distribute the theatre portion of their $50 million Andrew W. Mellon Arts Relief Fund. Before joining A.R.T./New York, Ginny was Director of Marketing at both the Roundabout Theatre Company and Manhattan Theatre Club.


Beth Milles is Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre Film and Dance at Cornell University. For the past year she has served as Head of the Directing MFA at Brown University and as an Associate Director at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI. Recent directing work includes THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (Trinity Rep) and LAZARUS DISPOSED (Perishable Theatre). Other work includes writer/director Tim Robbins and Adam Simon's CARNAGE for The Actor's Gang in Los Angeles. Other Actor's Gang Credits include Carson Kreitzer's SELF DEFENSE (3 LA Weekly Awards), the world premiere of PRIVATE BATTLE (3 LA Weekly Nominations) and her own adaptation of Moliere's THE IMAGINARY INVALID (4 Ovation Awards). She directed the world premiere of NERO: ANOTHER GOLDEN ROME at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco (developed in collaboration with playwright Steven Sater and composer Duncan Sheik). Other Directing credits include Julia Sweeney's AND GOD SAID “HA” on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre. She is the founder of Banter Company, which focuses on the adaptation of classical theatre for the modern audience. She specializes in physical theatre and development of devised movement based work as well as the tradition of farce and the contemporization of the Commedia dell'Arte. She has directed and developed new work at many theatres including Playwrights Horizons, The Juilliard School, The Sundance Theatre Institute, The Mark Taper Forum, The Guthrie Theatre, and Williamstown Theatre Festival, ASK Theatre Projects, Naked Angels, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, and The Kitchen Theatre. Beth is a graduate of Cornell University and the ART Institute for Advanced Training at Harvard University.
